An Interview with Dr. Jason Fond regarding sports medicine surgical procedures
Question: Dr. Jason Fond, how has sports medicine evolved?
Dr. Fond: Sports medicine is one of the fastest growing subspecialties in orthopedic surgery. The procedures are commonly performed in a minimally invasive fashion. This leads to less surgical trauma and a quicker recovery. In addition, the instruments and implants that are used by sports medicine surgeons have improved significantly, leading to more efficient procedures.
Question: Dr. Fond: What are some of the newest technologies in sports medicine?
Dr. Fond: Some of the newest procedures in sports medicine focus on replicating the patient’s native anatomy. Cutting edge technology and procedures have allowed surgeons to perform these procedures, returning patients to their previous level of activity.
Question: Dr. Fond, what do you see on the horizon for sports medicine?
Dr. Fond: The most intensive area of research in sports medicine currently involves biologics. By using blood products and growth factors, patients may heal faster and with better results.
Question: Dr. Fond, what’s the most common procedure you perform surgically?
Dr. Jason Fond: The most common surgery I perform is arthroscopy of the knee and shoulder. This involves inserting a camera in the injured joint, allowing the surgeon to visualize the area of concern. With new technology, significant reconstructive procedures can be performed using arthroscopy in a minimally invasive fashion. Surgery such as anterior cruciate reconstruction, meniscus repair, rotator cuff repair and shoulder labral repair can be performed successfully using arthroscopy.
